anyway

I spent the best part of today's daylight hours watching Rapha Nadal play and eventually beat fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in the Australian Open (the match lasted over five hours, in the heat of a Melbourne evening).

The skill and stamina of both players was phenomonal. On court in tennis singles, there is never a team to hide behind, to pass the ball to. The players' judgements have to taken in nanaseconds. And no space for sulking.

Only in the last few games, when Verdasco begun to miss his first serves did I sense he was going to fail to overcome my hero (the commentators didn't sense it)

The final, Rapah versus Roger Federer is on Sunday, 0830 am, BBC2. I do recommend.
